Project synopsis

Color is demonstrably not a property that is to be “recovered” from environmental “inputs” in some unique way. Color is a dimension that according to Olafur Eliasson, “shows up only in the phylogenetic dialogues between an environment and the history of an active autonomous self that partly defines what counts as an environment.” Light and reflectance provide a mode of Coupling, a perturbation that provides a place for all the senses to correlate and generate moments for imagination and present emotion.

Color and light are never the autonomous phenomenon or aesthetic end in itself. They are indeed the vehicle to explore a range of human and social behavior. A simple spotlight penetrating through glass, projects the uncanny shadow of a gothic window frame on the ceiling. The installation is ultimately not only about vision or color but also about the possibilities of communication. It isn’t completed without the interaction between viewers and artwork. Viewers can have the communication and collaboration with the light by generating sounds from touching carbon fiber roll. With different positions one touches and pressure one applies, the installation becomes more flexible and temporary. It is either unfinished or undergoing construction.

About participation

The interaction between viewers and artwork is composed ofthree phases: encountering, understanding, and creating. The use of carbonfiber aims to generate different signals according to distance, position, andpressure, thus creates proper tunes to the atmosphere artwork intended.  In this sense the piece is ultimately not only about vision or color but also about the possibilities of communication-which means the act of sharing.
