IMAGINE JFK 2050
Redesign of JFK airport for future cargo system
Precedent study
The Bibliothèque nationale de France, is the national library of France, locate in Paris. It is the national repository of all that is published in France and also holds extensive historical collections. Most well known for two luminous library reading rooms, French architect Henri Labrouste has been long admired by both modernists and post modernists for his innovative embrace of then-new technologies, like cast iron and gas lighting. His architecture maintains a timeless aesthetic while embracing new materials and technologies. The three layer roof stucture presents an exquisite geometry of the glass skylights that diffuse natural sunlight onto lustrous ceramic panels, slender iron columns, and the library patrons below.
Learning from this vertical hierarchy, we intended to embed the logistic system into the same kind of space hierarchy by arrange the process of scan-transport-storage-sort-deliver cargo in to the structure design of the new ariport.

Prototyping
From the vertical structure, we generated prototypes based on the compostion of the three layer system. There is moments where storage integrates with transporting system, sorting system, or shipping system, etc. The vertical transporting system also becomes the path for lighting. Different angle, length, and width of the tunnel helps the natural light cover every part of the logistic system.
Eventually, we integrate all the different prototypes into continuously evolving trunks that follow the logisitic system. The top to buttom organization of the whole ariport reciporates and anticipates the future airport design.
Scanning & Labelling
The new JFK Airport uses fully automatic method to scan and label all the packages. The Robot arm plant is in the basement level of the airport. Packages brought down by the cargo elevators or conveyor belts go through multiple scanning procedures to make sure everything is safe and goes to the correct department for the next step.
Sorting & Storage
Vertical storage system creates much more efficient way to place all the packages. Each vertical system is connected to multiples coveyor belts, cargo escalators, and platforms for manually control.
Distrbuting
The airport spread out multi-level convey belts connecting to planes, offsite storages, delivery vehicles, etc. All the conveyor belts are design to easily move under or above the ground and automatically alter its pace to correspondingly treat packages such as fragile items.
