HOMO LUDENS
A self-renewing organism of the ever-changing society
Traumatized history
1900: According to painting documents the river bank used to be overgrown with weeds, inly a few fishing villiage settled here sporadically. Barely can people come to this place. Qiantang River was a cut off to the conncetion of south and north part of China. The river and mountaion impeded the development of this area. Fishin-boats were the only transportation for the residences. The undeveloped situation stified the vitality of Qiantang River, hardly anyone came to this place besides painters and poets. Both sides of Qiantang River used to be small fishing village that the only transportation is fishing-boats.

1930: Qiantang River Bridge was constructed in 1933 but destroyed only after 30 days of use in order to stop the invasion of Japanses troops. After the urgent evacuation of residence, the designer pushed the button of the explosive himself. After the termination of feudal society, China was in great poverty, shanty towns were everywhere and people lived in starvation and the fear of invasion. The first self-design bridge located on Qiantang River, it was mainly used to transport military goods because of the Sino-Japanses war. The historical turning point made great contribution to our country. The bridge became a landmark of memory and tourism afterwards.

2010: The reform and open-up helped the development of national economy, a great deal of high-rises emerged as the villages disappeared. But the urban-rural gap still existed. Today Qiantang River Bridge has already past its design lifetime. It is now using as a by-rood for light weight vehicles. The bridge has army guarding it in order to keep out the pedestrians. The beautiful view on the bridge is segregated from people and the bridge is working as a historic landmark without a soul. Nowadays, most of the bridges' transport function has transferred to new bridges nearby.
Form generation
Instead of presuming the permanence of architecture as preservation projects in China mostly do, we believe that turning the bridge to a self-renewing organism of the ever-changing society could offer a better solution.
Inspired by the explosion during the war, the first action is to once again destroy the bridge. Only when turning the bridge into an isolated relic would the public no longer be blocked from accessing the site. More critically, the “new explosion” itself commemorates the dramatic historical moment as they both share a similar objective – destroy to protect , making the activism event an instant memorial.
